BATALJ Review & Play Test

BATALJ is a fierce online turn-based action strategy game where you face other players in one vs one battle with your own custom-built squad. Skill and smart plays decide who comes out victorious.”

Fall Damage were kind enough to let us take a look at BATALJ ahead of today’s release. This is the first title to be released by the Swedish game studio established in 2017.

One of the more complex sides to BATALJ is the building of your squad. There are a vast array of Units to choose with varying capabilities. It’s very easy to form a band of warriors/beasts that harness little fighting strength. Going up against a player with a well-balanced squad, who knows how to use it, is going to mean a quick match for those without the in-depth knowledge of each Unit.

As with all strategy games, the key focus is control, in this case, you want to have the majority of control points per round. The first player to reach five points wins the match.

There are three different factions that house their own respective Units. The Rusters are the lowly scavenger-style fighters, the Re-Linked who are a more advanced tribe that shed their bodies and live through machines. And lastly, the Spliced who are the high tech genetically enhanced variety.

 

Units don’t have different movement statistics that determine their reach across the map.

Instead, the Unit will only be able to perform actions depending on the number of action points they have. If a player has used a large number of points on a previous turn, they will be moved to the bottom of the Timeline. While the Units with a larger amount of available points will have preference to act.

The Scheduling Phase is your time to plot out the movements of your Units, and this is where the strategy aspect comes into play. Lasting for only two minutes, you will need to act fast. Forward thinking and a bit of perception are required to efficiently stave off your opponent’s attacks, while at the same time execute plans to deal the highest damage possible.

The Action Phase is when these scheduled moves take place in the order they were placed. So it’s important you have been thorough to avoid situations like moving to a Hex in anticipation of an enemies movement, unleashing the fury, only to find they didn’t actually move into the path of your wrath.

A Sandbox arena allows you to spawn Units from the varying factions and test them out. Not only can you deploy a chosen character, but you can also select whether they are a friendly or enemy Unit and test them against each other at your own pace. A nice feature that will surely be the go-to for players wanting to piece together the perfect squad. A playground to analyze everything about each Unit and fine tune your tactics.

Learning all of the various Units, Heroes, Passive Abilities and so on is enough to do your head in, especially if you are serious about forming a tight squad. But it is impericle to the game that you learn as much as you can, as fast as you can, about characters that you aren’t even using. The reason behind this is because you need to learn the behaviour that other Units are likely to exhibit in order to properly plan your strategy.

If you waste a move because you hadn’t taken into account what the enemy was capable of, or worse, underestimate them, you can end up getting diced pretty quickly.

This isn’t a game you can just jump straight into and expect to pick up immediately. There are tutorials available and I strongly recommend you utilize them, you will be a little shell-shocked without the explantion.
