Apex Legends outlines anti-cheat plans following increasing reports of cheaters

Since the dawn of Apex legends back in February, there have been cheaters like in every game, but there’s something about cheaters in battle royales that just makes them even more infuriating.

So far Apex has banned some 400,000+ cheaters since launch, but the start of season two has seen an increase in cheaters again.

At least, that’s what Apex Legends players believe, especially those grinding the game’s new ranked mode. More than ever, players have been posting their experience about running into cheaters in this high stakes mode.

After a higher number of reports since the launch, Developer Respawn Entertainment has,  shed some light on the work that goes on behind the scenes to combat cheating.

The dev team is actually looking to the future with their first load of preventative measures, they are looking to stop the cheaters before they even play in the first place.  To do this, respawn will look to identify at high risk regions, as well as spammer accounts, and implement 2-factor authentication which would block the cheaters before they even made it online.

In addition to this, In order to help automatically detect and ban cheaters, respawn are investing in modelling cheater patterns with the help of machine learning, thus eliminating the need for humans to examine the data.

With all the resources that are now available to the respawn team, this is now one of many components being worked on to adapt to new cheats and help stamp them out from the game.

In a post on Reddit, the developer highlighted what it’s working on as follows:

  • Using machine learning to create behavior models that detect and auto ban cheaters.
  • Ongoing work to adapt to new cheats.
  • Requiring TFA in certain regions on high risk accounts.
  • Improving detection that identifies and bans new spam accounts before they are used.
  • Matchmaking that matches detected cheaters and spammers together.
  • Investigating how people party up for matches. Even if you are not specifically using a cheat, partying up with cheaters is still cheating.
  • Increasing resources whether that be people or tech.

I think one of the most innovative ideas surrounding cheating is actually Respawn’s idea to put cheaters up against each other.  Not only does this keep them away from the mainstream non-cheating gamers, but will hopefully take away from the essence of cheating in that the cheaters surely won’t have as much fun only playing against other cheaters.  Is this going to be a way to eliminate cheaters in the long run? We shall have to wait and see.

It’s great to see Respawn investing so much in the war against cheating.  In their own words “ the war against cheaters will be ongoing and remains a high priority.  There will always be work to do, improvements to make and new things to adapt to.” They also thanked all the players who had been involved in removing cheaters from the game – and I extend that thanks too !!

Apex Legends is due to receive another patch next week, so now we just need to sit back, keep calm and game on.
